Farley’s Friday: Joke’s on me

Farley here,

Did you know when ice melts off a pond’s surface, the water doesn’t get warm right away? In fact, it’s freezing.

Kristina did try to tell me before I jumped in, but I didn’t listen.

Happy April Fool’s Day. Don’t do anything silly. 🙂

Farley’s Friday: I’ve Got a Girlfriend

Farley here,

Let me introduce Piper. She’s my girl. She’s a border terrier, was born one week after me, and has been visiting us this week.

Here we are the day we came home to our humans.

Farley and Piper Day 1

And here we are on the couch seven years later.

Farley Piper

I may look aloof, but I’ve got a huge crush on her, and I’m trying to look cool.

Farley’s Friday: SQUIRREL!

Farley here,

Look what Kristina did to me now. I’m thinking she can read my mind, just by the way I’m giving her my big brown-eyed, I’m-the-most-pathetic-dog-ever stare and she gets I don’t want to wear boots pulled up like socks.

Farley Boots

“What are you thinking?” I bark.

Kristina scratches my ear. “There’s a ton of snow and it’s warm. You know what that means…Remember what happened the other day?”

I do remember. Kristina spent an hour getting snow clumps off my fur. I loved it. But, alas, I wag my tail and give in. Let’s just get out the door.

We hit the trails. I’m running as fast as I can in these silly boots, when I hear the tell-tale squeak of a squirrel. I glance to my left.

There it is! Without thinking I bound through the snow.

Farley Squrrel

I chase and I chase, but I just can’t get him. He’s too fast.

Then guess what happens. My boot comes off. Oops.

Do you see how deep the snow is? Kristina didn’t wear snowshoes today, and she had to climb through deep powder to get my boot.

“Don’t come in here,” I bark. “You’ll never find it.”

She laughs and me, gets down on her hands and knees and crawls across the snow. She must really want my boot.

After a little digging, she actually finds it.

“Ta da,” she says.

Boo, I think. Then I jump on her and lick her face. I love to play and what’s better than playing with my human in the snow? Not much, really.

In case you hadn’t heard, Kristina’s first novel is on sale, but only until tomorrow. She’s very proud of DESCENT, so if you haven’t read it, now’s your chance to get the eBook free.

Farley’s Friday: A Wheaten Holiday

Farley here,

It’s January now, and I’m dreaming about all the fun I had over the holiday.

I made a new friend but forgot to ask his name.

Farley and pal

I played with an old friend, Finn.

And I opened every present under the tree. Talk about ripping good fun!

Farley’s Friday: Playtime

Farley here,

The sun rises over the mountain peaks just as I hear a bark. You’d think it was early, but it’s already 10:30. We have short days up north, especially in-between the mountains.

The temp is well below zero. The groomers are getting the runs ready for skiing. And I’m minding my own business.

There it is again. A bark. I don’t smell any humans other than Kristina, so who’s out here alone?

“It’s me, Max,” my neighbour barks.

Clearly, he’s escaped again and is heading our way. Before Kristina can react and send him home, I run.

Farley Running

“I’m coming,” I bark. Kristina, with her humans legs, is slow. I slip around her before she can catch me and head his way.

Farley playnign with Max 2

Max’s owner yells for him to come.

“Ignore him,” I bark.

He glances once in the direction of home, once back at me, and says, “Let’s go.”

Kristina has her phone out. She’s going to tell on Max, but she’s smiling. I know she’ll let us play, and I love to play with Max.

Happy Friday!

Farley’s Friday: Gonna get that squirrel – Not

Farley here,

And Max too. Max is my neighbour, and on a good day, Kristina brings him along for a walk. Notice – no leashes – the bears must be hibernating. Or Kristina is getting braver – ha ha.

“Farley,” Max barks. “Come here. I’ve got a squirrel.”

“Where’d he go?” I bark.

Farley Max 1

Max points at the tree with his nose. “He was here a second ago.”

I scramble close. “I can smell him. He’s not far.”

Max whips around the tree, but the squirrel isn’t on the other side. “Up! Go up.”

“Jump higher.” I’m a short fluff ball. Max is sleek and athletic, so maybe he can reach the chattering rodent.

Farley Max 2

“What if we catch him?”

“I don’t know,” Max barks. “I’ve never caught one.”

Anyone know what to do with a squirrel if you catch one? I think we need instructions.

Farley’s Friday: Dangerous Frothing Rivers

Farley here,

Hiking along Toby Creek, a dog gets hot. And when a dog is hot, he wants to go swimming. But…

Farley in Toby Creek

To my humiliation, Kristina only let me go in the baby pool. And you know I like share the moments when I get humiliated, so here I am standing in the shallows checking that none of my dog friends are in the area to make fun of me.

For some reason, Kristina thinks the current is too strong for me. And granted, I don’t like swimming, so I kinda see her point. She trusts me enough to leave me off leash and know the circle of rocks is my boundary.

I’ll leave the dangerous frothing river to the bears and the moose.

Farley’s Friday: Footloose and Bear Free

Farley here,

I haven’t seen a bear in weeks. Not that I don’t like bears, but Kristina won’t let me off leash when they’re in the area.

The heat wave made the beasts uncomfortable, and they’ve plodded on up the mountain to cooler terrain. At least, that’s where I think they went.

So I’m chasing frogs through the flowers without my leash.

This is dog happiness.

Farley’s Friday: Keeping Cool

Farley Here,

If you haven’t heard, British Columbia is having a heat wave. So how do you keep cool? You wade in the river. Now, I’m only allowed in the run off portion of the Toby Creek. The main channel is flowing at full speed and could carry me away, but the water is still cold and tasty in the shallows.

Farley In Creek

And yes, I’m still on a leash. We haven’t seen a bear in a week, but my humans want another week to go by to be sure the bears have moved to a higher altitude.

After romping in the creek, I head home for  a nap – in my favourite place. I’m not actually allowed on the couch, but I snuck up when Kristina wasn’t looking.

Farley on Couch

She loves me too much to do anything about it. Lucky for me, Matt isn’t at home, so please don’t tell him.

Farley’s Friday: I Have a Girlfriend!

Farley here,

My heart starts to pound. My legs turn to Jelly. I see the dog of my dreams. Tell me she’s not beautiful. I dare you. We met while out for a walk with my humans.

IMG_2286

Her name is Beans, because she’s – you know – full of them. I see her strutting toward me with a glint in her eye. Her fur is silky, her tail is wagging. She’s inviting me to play.

She has this cool human who throws food in the water. I offer for her to go after the food first but discover she doesn’t like to swim. It’s all about her beautiful fur. She’s just been to the salon.

I don’t want her know I’m afraid of deep water. I’ve just been bragging that I lived on a sailboat for five years, so in I go.

Kristina can’t believe it. She’s clapping her hands and giggling. She thinks I’m swimming, but my toes are actually touching the ground. There’s no way I’m going in over my head. Not for food. Not even for my girlfriend. Girlfriends are supposed to like you even though you may have a weakness, right?

Did I mention I’m crazy about Beans? I’ve gotta go find her again.

Woof woof.
